In in his works Francis Offman represents memories of the African world, and specifically of Rwanda, the land of his childhood.
His works—such as Untitled—look like abstract compositions, but in reality they subtend references to the world in which the artist lived part of his childhood before arriving in Italy. On the surface, the artist associates vivid colors with areas made of coffee dust and with scraps of recycled paper that enter the composition as cut-outs or wounds. What is evoked is the alchemical principle of the movement of matter: if every substance has a diasporic structure and leaves a mark of its passage, then the substances used by the artist on the surface become a metaphor for the social space marked by continuous movements, while the medium becomes a symbol of the earth that is called upon to accommodate such movements.

Francis Offman currently lives and works in Bologna, Italy. Recent exhibitions include those at: Castello di Rivoli, Turin (2022); MACTE, Termoli (2022); Italian Cultural Institute, Paris (2022); P420, Bologna (2021); Herald ST, London (2021); Kunstakademie, Berlin (2019). In 2020 he was among the winners of the project “Nuovo Forno del Pane”, promoted by MAMbo, Bologna. His works are part of important collections which include that of Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea.
